#47 (Untitled, with a Galapagos Marine Iguana). Digital Drawing, 20″x38″@300 dpi. 2/21/2018.

It’s a bit of a miracle folks. I haven’t added to this series since November 7th, and I haven’t been able to make art for about 2 months. I gave away my monitor when I moved home to America. I couldn’t stay in the U.S. because of some unforeseen circumstances, so moved (back) to Thailand. Between the various hotels and accommodations I’ve moved 5 times, and in the process lost my stylus.

When I left here over 2 years ago I left my monitor with friends and they generously gave it back to me, along with a computer table. I just bought the cheapest Wacom tablet I could find, and now I’m finally able to make art again. It’s been such a difficult slog I didn’t know when this day would finally come again.

I’m hoping I’m finally stable again and can keep working.

So, the first piece I decided to do was a simple one. For these I work from my imagination with no preconceived idea. It’s all just drawing with black or white, and one brush. Mostly I’m going on instinct.

This is about my favorite way to work because I never get bored, and there’s no tedious rendering. It can even be a fun way to work, sort of a game, to see what unexpected thing I come up with. Sometimes they are barely figurative. I’m not interested in a realistic rendering here, but rather just a meld of composition and subject matter.

In this one the Galapagos Marine Iguana, on the bottom left of the larger dark, oval shape, as about the last thing that materialized. The white orb becomes more of a moon that allows the iguana to see at night. I imagine he’s on rocks looking down at the sea.

If you don’t already know, Marine Iguanas are amazing lizards because they have evolved to dive into the surf, swim the to sea floor, and eat seaweed. Truly amazing for a terrestrial, land-loving, cold-blooded species.

There’s a suggesting 3-eyes skull in the other oval. Overall there’s a darkly contemplative feel, something welled up from the subconscious.

Here’s all 47 pieces in the series, which are all images done exclusively from my imagination, and unpremeditated, so far in a slide show.

I could use your help. Through Patreon, you can give $1 (or more) per month to help keep me going (y’know, so I don’t have to put art back on the back-burner while I slog away at a full-time job). Ah, if only I could amass a few hundred dollars per month this way, I could focus entirely on my art. See how it works here.

Or go directly to my account.

  1. Oh, they’re dark alright! I think the black-and-white ones go better with the eeriness they convey. Makes them look more timeless, welling up primal fears. I really like “Now is the Season of The Witch”.

    1. Thanks. That was one of the more elaborate ones. My art is varied enough that I have some people who prefer the B&W ones, some that prefer the color ones, some prefer the digital impasto ones, and so on. Depending on my mood I switch up.

I agree that the B&W ones are more eerie and primal. It’s also a style I used to work in, with charcoal and an eraser, decades ago. It’s very natural for me to work this way.

  2. OMG! They’re a SCREAM!! The monster artist painting the other monster’s portrait is cracking me up! And the one above it on the still shots of the 2 fish heads is showing your Asian influence, I think. CRAZY MAN!!
