SFAU #16, by Eric Wayne. Digital painting, 24×26″ @300 dpi, 4/2018.

If you are new to this series all the images are based on recent photos of me after being fed through Faceapp (which can change age, gender, etc.), then altered in Photoshop, and then painted in Corel Painter. None of the people actually exist, and thus they are like self portraits from parallel dimensions or alternate universes.

I don’t think of these as stand-alone pieces, but as building on each other. So far I’ve mostly shared them in groups of 2. Here’s this one and #15 together.I made a list several days ago of how many more of these I have potential images and ideas for, and I came up with over 30. So, as I share them I’m already thinking about where I’m going to drop in a surprise that makes one re-contextualize the rest of them.

With the current one I thought it was time to throw in a boy (mostly I’ve done old codgers and young women). Getting a good one to work with requires a lot of trial and error with the neural network. Usually it doesn’t predict the younger version of me very accurately at all, always giving me dark hair and making me look more Italian. This one captured some of my distinctive features, and has a bit of a defiant feel. I am planning on creating some more distant cousins, so to speak. it depends on if something about the personality grabs me.

I completely switched out the background and changed the color of the shirt. I used to do most the work in Painter, but now I like to experiment more in the Photoshop phase.

I’ll save discussion about the underlying content for the next image, which I plan at this point to be one of the ones that is sort of a “glitch in the Matrix” that makes the skewed reality more apparent and forces one to contemplate what is real.

Here are some details:

All 16 so far (in chronological order):

Stay tuned for more entities to emerge.

And if you like the (experimental) sort of art that I do, and you don’t want me to have to quit or put it on a back-burner, please consider chipping in so I can keep working until I drop. Through Patreon, you can give $1 (or more) per month to help keep me going (y’know, so I don’t have to put art back on the back-burner while I slog away at a full-time job). Ah, if only I could amass a few hundred dollars per month this way, I could focus entirely on my art and writing. See how it works here.

  1. You could have been a model in a parallel universe. 😉 I can’t believe you have over 30 ideas still pending. I was assuming that most of the inspiration comes while playing with the app, from all the mixing and matching.
