I didn’t take this picture in the last few days, during my visa run to Laos. This is from one of my trips in 2007. I was just going through some old photos to see how Vientiane has changed in the last 7 years, and was impressed by the composition of this photo. I’m particularly struck by the way the shadows of wires above run parallel above the pipe running along the wall, casting it’s own shadow. There are multiple layers in the image, such as the objects, their shadows, the paint on the wall, and the stains on the wall. Some things are clear and others blurry. It really captures a lazy afternoon in Laos.
I probably don’t need to say that I’m not really a photographer. I just have a good eye. My camera is shit. I’m a bit resentful of all the people out there with their giant, high-end cameras with lenses on them the size of soup cans. But I can still get good photos with a little extra work, patience, and retouching in Photoshop.
